Traction motors in locomotives are used to convert electrical power into tractive effort (mechanical power). Controlled DC power is supplied to the traction motors to enable the locomotive’s operation. Depending on the type of locomotive (4-axle or 6-axle), either four or six traction motors are used in a single locomotive.
