In self-generating passenger coaches, power is produced by an axle mounted power generator (alternator). The complete system includes an alternator and a
rectifier cum regulator unit (RRU). In non-air-conditioned passenger coaches, a single 4.5 kW alternator is used, while in air-conditioned passenger coaches, two 25 kW alternators are employed.
